Murray families, in case you missed it last night, the Board of Education met to review our learning options and voted to approve two changes that will help strengthen our ability to educate during the pandemic.

Since we began, August 17, our parents, students, and educators have stepped up and sprinted out of the gate like champions. But this is a marathon, and while we all have big hearts to do our best we have to consider sustainability for students, parents, and teachers. Simply put, we believe our students are at their best when our teachers are at their best.

We also respect each family’s efforts and desires to right-fit their student’s learning experience. So, we will continue to give all families the hybrid, in-person, and online-only learning options we started the year with.

However, beginning Second Term, we will allow our families with online-only students to make a change to their learning option to in-class learning. Information on how to make this change will be sent to our online families directly.

The Board also approved an adjustment to the daily bell schedule. The pandemic nature of our situation, coupled with the extended flexibility given to parents and students, necessitates that we equip our teachers more time to create closer connections with all students, and particularly those who are struggling.

While many students are thriving – this was validated at our parent-teacher conferences – there is a segment that needs additional attention and more one-to-one connectivity. Our mission and hearts as educators are to ensure ALL students have equal opportunity to succeed. We know our Murray community joins us in that sentiment – because we are Murray!.

The board considered many different scenarios and options, all of which were a direct result of feedback from families and teachers. Unfortunately, none of them were wrapped in a bow of broad consensus. Each was tagged with a myriad of pros and cons that are complex.

But we believe this difficult decision will yield a measure of relief to teachers thus expanding their capacity to provide a quality education for ALL students. Below you will find our adjusted bell schedule that begins the first day of the Second Term, October 26.

One final point. Throughout all of our Returning, and now Learning, with Care planning this year we embraced consistency as an ideal to thwart disruption. You should know that in spite of these changes, we hold to that guiding principle. We are not afraid to make additional tweaks based on new information, but we also don’t take them lightly and ask for your patience as we navigate this uncertain, yet hopeful time in our history.

As our high school seniors have resiliently reminded us of their theme this year – we will Unite and Prevail!
