As we celebrate National School Social Workers Week, it’s essential to recognize the vital role that school-based social workers play within the Murray City School District (MCSD). The district’s School-Based Mental Health (SBMH) Team, which includes licensed School Social Workers and School Psychologists, is a cornerstone of student support, ensuring that students not only succeed academically but also thrive emotionally and socially.
SBMH Team members are integral to implementing tier-one social and emotional learning (SEL) initiatives. They utilize their expertise in mental health, prevention, and intervention strategies across frameworks like MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports), PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports), restorative practices, and trauma-informed care. These professionals are equipped with the knowledge to address a wide range of challenges that may hinder a student’s ability to progress in school, from academic difficulties to emotional struggles and social issues.
The SBMH Team adopts a comprehensive, tiered approach to meet student needs. They begin by assessing school-wide needs, planning service delivery, and collecting data to monitor progress. They offer tier-one prevention programs that promote SEL, while also providing more targeted, individualized interventions at tiers two and three for students requiring additional support.
Services provided by the team include mental health support, such as individual, family, and group counseling, crisis intervention, and psychoeducational services. Topics for group counseling may range from mindfulness and coping skills to managing anxiety, depression, and grief. These services are led by Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs), School Psychologists, or Certified Social Workers (CSWs) under the supervision of an LCSW, ensuring that students receive high-quality care.
A key strength of the SBMH team lies in fostering strong home-school-community linkages. By connecting these environments, school social workers can support students in a holistic manner, addressing not just their immediate needs but also working to break down the barriers that affect their long-term success.
Through a blend of compassionate care, professional expertise, and evidence-based strategies, the SBMH Team is making a significant impact in the lives of students across the Murray City School District.
