The Murray City School District Board of Education voted unanimously to appoint Jennifer King as Viewmont Elementary School principal for the 2018-19 school year

at the May 10, 2018 Board of Education meeting. Ms. King (pictured right) replaces current principal, Matt Nelson, who has accepted a position in the Canyon’s School District.

Jennifer King comes to Murray from the Park City School District where she has been employed since 1996, working as an Instructional Academic Coach, District Office Specialist, and teacher. Prior to that she taught in Florida schools. A graduate of Utah State, Florida State and the University of Utah, she holds a certificate in Educational Leadership, a Master of Science in Secondary Education, and a Bachelor of Arts in History.

“I believe that student learning, growth, and success are the most important responsibilities of those involved in education,” says Ms. King, “Moreover, an administrator must value and utilize the talents amongst staff members … and by doing so, will help to maximize the schools resources.”

Superintendent Jennifer Covington comments, “We had several excellent candidates to choose from for this principal position, and feel that Jennifer’s skills and experience will bring strong leadership to the school. We are very happy to have her join our administrative staff and look forward to Viewmont continuing to excel in serving our students and community.”

At Murray High School, Ms. Laura deShazo began duties as assistant principal on April 30, 2018. She came to MHS from the Utah State Board of Education where she has been employed for the past six years as a Career and Technical Education Coordinator. Ms. deShazo (pictured left) started working for the USBE after teaching CTE and business classes for 7 ½ years at Murray High School.

“Murray High School is excited to welcome Laura back to our staff. We know she will be a great asset to the school with her enthusiasm, leadership skills, and her broad perspective of educational issues that impact our students,” said Murray High Principal Scott Wihongi.

Laura deShazo holds a B.S. in Secondary Business and Marketing Education from Auburn University, an M.A. in Business from Webster University, and an Administrative/Supervisory License from Southern Utah University. An active outdoor enthusiast, Ms. deShazo spends time outside of work with her family. They enjoy biking and running rivers in southern Utah, and skiing in the Wasatch Mountains.
