Keeping Our Kids Safe: A Message on Responsible Firearm Storage

The Murray City School District (MCSD) is committed to a comprehensive approach to safety that protects both our students and our educators. Today, we are highlighting a critical component of that safety net: responsible firearm storage.
In early 2024, the U.S. Department of Education—then led by Secretary Miguel Cardona—issued a nationwide call for increased dialogue and education regarding secure storage. As we move through the 2025-2026 school year, the importance of this partnership between schools and families has never been more vital.
Why This Matters Now
Firearms remain a leading cause of death among children in the U.S. Statistics show that more than three-quarters of school shooters accessed firearms from their own homes or the homes of relatives. While firearm safety is just one part of our broader security strategy, it is a preventative measure that requires our collective attention.
Recent national reviews, including the Department of Justice’s look at the 2022 Robb Elementary tragedy, have underscored that responsible ownership is the first line of defense in preventing unauthorized access. While Utah state law currently emphasizes voluntary safety measures over mandated storage requirements, the responsibility of keeping our students safe remains a shared community priority.
How Families Can Help
Addressing firearm storage can be a sensitive conversation, but parental engagement is indispensable. By taking the following steps, you create an added layer of protection for our entire community:
-
Invest in Security: Use high-quality locks or safes to prevent any unauthorized person from reaching a firearm.
-
Manage Access Rigorously: Codes and keys should never be easily accessible. Update your combinations regularly and keep keys on your person or in a separate secure location.
-
Store Ammunition Separately: As an added safeguard against accidents, store ammunition in a different locked container from the firearm itself.
-
Educate and Establish Rules: Talk to your children about the dangers of unsupervised firearms and set clear, non-negotiable expectations regarding their access.
-
Use Temporary Measures: Even when traveling or outside your normal routine, utilize cable locks or lockable cases to ensure security is never compromised.
A Resource for Our Families
We want to make it as easy as possible for our community to practice these safety measures. If you are in need of a FREE gun lock, please reach out to District Prevention Specialist Sierra Marsh. She and her team of social workers have a limited supply available for MCSD families.
Responsible storage is a hallmark of responsible ownership. By prioritizing the well-being of your household, you are contributing to a safer learning environment for every child in Murray.
