Message from the Superintendent

Photo of Jennifer CovingtonDear Murray Families:

A strong partnership between home and school is essential for student success. Murray City School District is committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment, and your active involvement in your child’s education makes all the difference.

Here are a few simple ways you can help your child thrive:

  • Encourage daily reading: Spend 15–20 minutes reading together or independently each day to build vocabulary, comprehension, and a lifelong love of reading.

  • Ask about their day: Regularly talk with your child about what they are learning and how they feel about school.

  • Model learning at home: Let your child see you reading, problem-solving, or being curious—it shows that learning is a lifelong habit.

  • Celebrate effort and growth: Recognize persistence and improvement as much as grades.

  • Prioritize rest and nutrition: Adequate sleep and healthy meals boost focus, energy, and learning.

  • Stay connected with teachers: Use ParentSquare to communicate regularly, share concerns, and collaborate on strategies that support your child’s success.

  • Be present at school events: Attend conferences, performances, and activities when possible—it shows your child you value their education.

When families and schools work together, students gain the foundation they need for academic achievement and personal growth. Please know that we are here to support you—reach out to your child’s teacher or the school office anytime.

Warm regards,
Jennifer Covington, Superintendent

  • The Murray City School District's (MCSD) Special Education Department is dedicated to serving students with disabilities from birth to age 22, ensuring they receive a public education tailored to their unique needs. The district operates under a "Child Find" notice, actively seeking out and evaluating any child who may require special education services. A key component of their services is the Assistive Technology (AT) team, which helps students with disabilities by providing tools and devices to enhance communication and learning. This team includes a range of specialists like occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists who assess and develop AT systems for students, helping them participate more fully in school activities. In addition to a comprehensive special education program, MCSD also addresses the needs of at-risk students and provides support for a variety of student services, including those for youth-in-care.

In addition to special education services provided under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Murray City School District also observes Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Contact the MCSD Special Education Department for specific questions and input forms for parents and physicians. You can also get more information from the Utah State Board of Education’s 504 Parent Guide. A Section 504 plan provides accommodations for students with disabilities who do not qualify for special education services under IDEA but still need support to access their education.
