CATCH My Breath: New Vaping Prevention Program for Grades 7–9

In our ongoing effort to strengthen substance use prevention within our schools, Murray City School District is introducing CATCH My Breath—a research-based e-cigarette prevention program—for all students in grades 7, 8, and 9.
This program is specifically designed to empower students to make healthy choices and avoid the risks associated with vaping.
Why Prevention Matters Now
Many teens are curious about e-cigarettes, often under the false impression that they are a "safe" alternative to smoking. However, the reality is concerning:
- Hidden Toxins: E-cigarettes contain nicotine and toxins, some of which are known to cause cancer.
- Rapid Addiction: The adolescent brain is uniquely vulnerable. Youth can become addicted to nicotine much faster than adults.
- High Doses: Many e-cigarettes deliver nicotine in doses equal to or even larger than traditional cigarettes.
- Future Risks: Nicotine use during teenage years increases the risk of using other substances and experiencing addiction later in life.
The Power of Parental Influence
Research shows that when parents actively discuss the dangers of tobacco and nicotine, their teens are significantly less likely to use them. CATCH My Breath is designed to provide a starting point for these important home conversations. We encourage you to ask your student what they are learning in class and what their thoughts are on these topics.
