Supporting Our Spartans: Why Your Used Medical Gear is a Game-Changer for Murray High Athletes

In the high-energy world of high school sports, injuries are often an unfortunate part of the game. When a Spartan goes down on the field or court, the road to recovery starts immediately. However, the financial burden of specialized medical equipment can often be an unexpected hurdle for families.
The Murray High School Sports Medicine program is reaching out to the community for donations of gently used medical equipment. While these items might be gathering dust in your garage, they are essential tools for the health, safety, and rehabilitation of our student-athletes.
Why These Items Matter
Proper medical equipment isn’t just about comfort; it’s about ensuring an injury heals correctly to prevent long-term damage. Here is why your specific donations are so vital:
-
Crutches & Walking Boots: These are the first line of defense for lower-extremity injuries. By properly offloading weight from a fractured bone or severely sprained ankle, boots and crutches prevent further trauma and ensure the structural integrity of the limb during the initial healing phase.
-
Ice Machines (Post-Surgical): Post-operative care is all about managing inflammation. These machines provide continuous cold therapy, which is significantly more effective than a standard ice pack at reducing deep-tissue swelling and managing pain without over-reliance on medication.
-
Shoulder Slings: Stabilization is key for rotator cuff or labrum injuries. A proper sling keeps the joint immobilized in a neutral position, allowing ligaments to knit back together without being stretched by the weight of the arm.
-
Knee & Ankle Braces: Whether used for acute injury management or as a preventative measure for athletes returning to play, these braces provide the external support necessary to protect vulnerable joints from "rolling" or hyperextending during physical activity.
Reducing the Cost of the Comeback
Injuries are stressful enough without the added "sticker shock" of medical hardware. By donating items in good condition, you are directly helping Jess Kerns and the Sports Medicine team provide immediate aid to students who may not have the means to purchase brand-new equipment on the spot.
The Goal: To ensure that every MHS athlete has access to the highest standard of care, regardless of their financial situation, and to get them back in the game safely and swiftly.
