When a student struggles to read the board, concentrate on a worksheet, or finish a reading assignment, the problem isn’t always motivation or ability. Quite often, it is simply a matter of eyesight.

To make sure clear vision is never a barrier to learning, Murray City School District nurses are teaming up once again with Friends for Sight for the annual district SightFest event on Thursday, November 19, 2026, at the District Office. Completed permission forms must be submitted no later than October 29 – these forms are linked below.

SightFest provides free comprehensive eye exams and new prescription glasses to qualifying students who do not have insurance coverage or the resources to pay for vision care out of pocket.

Why Early Vision Checks Matter

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

• 1 in 4 children in the United States has an undetected vision disorder.

• That number jumps to 50% in underserved communities.

• Up to 70% of children who need prescription glasses are currently not wearing them.

Because up to 80% of classroom learning happens visually, an uncorrected vision issue can quickly lead to reading delays, reduced attention spans, and lower overall academic performance. Regular screening ensures that small vision issues are caught before they affect a child's confidence and progress in school.

How to Participate in SightFest 2026

If your student failed their recent school vision screening, you will receive an official vision referral along with SightFest application information via ParentSquare.

• Eligibility: Students must lack private health or vision insurance coverage for eye exams or glasses.
