SLC Flu Cases Rising Early: MCSD Attendance Team Reminds Families to Protect Students Now

Salt Lake County Health Department (SLCoHD) epidemiologists report an unusually early uptick in local influenza cases this season—a trend monitored locally by the MCSD attendance team, which has noted an earlier-than-normal rise in student illnesses across district schools.
While public health officials typically recommend receiving a seasonal flu shot before Halloween—often summarized by the phrase "flu before boo"—health authorities are advising residents not to delay.
"With cases already increasing significantly, the common saying ‘flu before boo’ may be too late," said Dorothy Adams, SLCoHD Executive Director. "Get your flu vaccine now, in early October, rather than waiting, since it can take the body up to two weeks to build the immunity triggered by the vaccine."
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual flu vaccinations for everyone ages 6 months and older.
Guidance for Murray Families
With illness already impacting classroom attendance, district officials encourage families to review MCSD’s sick-day guidelines to help keep classrooms healthy and prevent wider outbreaks. For detailed information on when a student should stay home, parents can review the district's recent guidance: Is Your Child Too Sick for School? (August 27).
