A Brief History of HORIZON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
By 1979, increased traffic on the west side of Murray caused concerned parents to petition the school board for better safety measures. Although the board considered several options, they eventually responded by building a new school at 5180 South 700 West. During a board meeting in February 1981, the name “Horizon” was chosen for the new elementary school, and it was completed by November of the same year.
In 2002, Horizon pioneered the first Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program in the District. currently, the DLI program provides dual language learning in Spanish for about 350 students. As part of the program, these students continue their language training through Hillcrest Jr. High and Murray High School.
Horizon also holds annual Spring and Fall carnivals that are very popular. They also have a strong and robust slate of PTA activities for the community to enjoy. In December, a Sub-for-Santa Program is conducted school-wide with SelectHealth, a valued business partner in the community.
Great educators, administrators and staff, parents, and the best students around make Horizon Elementary a unique and dynamic learning atmosphere with a rich history at MCSD!
