Brief History of RIVERVIEW JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

In 1959, the most critical issue in the Murray City School District was the need for more junior high student space. The school board had been investigating possible sites for a west-side junior high for a while, but it wasn’t until 1960 that a location was acquired and in April, groundbreaking ceremonies for Riverview Junior High School were held. The building consisted of ten classrooms, administrative offices, shop, gymnasium and auditorium. Completed for the 1961-1962 school year, two-thirds of the $600,000 plus cost of the building was paid from state funds. At first the school didn’t have enough students to fill it and bussed students in from the southeast section of Murray, but it wasn’t long until the school had over-crowding issues.

During the 1970s, the school district funded upgrade projects at nearly every school in the district and a new shop addition was made to Riverview to boost vocational education. In the 1990s, technology centers were built at both junior high schools.

An energetic school, just like the junior high students who attend it, Riverview Junior High continues to set a high bar with many great traditions, dedicated staff and faculty, and patrons who provide strong support to this great Murray District school!
