Art class students showing workBeyond elementary school core curriculum, MCSD embeds special enrichment courses to help round out each student’s learning experience. These “Specials” classes nurture student interests and help foster overall learning engagement.

Specials classes are different at each school and rotate at different lengths and times throughout the school year. Disciplines offered include Art, Music, Dance, Theater, Physical Education, Technology, and Library Integration. Most of these programs intentionally integrate and help support core subjects of language arts, science, social studies, and math.

Over the years, this coursework has excited and motivated students to explore and discover hidden talents while enriching their academic experience. Further, they have demonstrated improved language development, motor skills, deeper learning, and student engagement.

In some instances, licensed specials teachers are funded through a state grant named Beverly Taylor Sorenson and work closely with mentors at nearby universities to ensure a robust and age-appropriate learning experience.

Here’s a brief explanation of each of the Specials found at MCSD:

 Art

Art educators introduce children to different mediums and styles through examples and experimental opportunities. We encourage students to draw, paint, and create. As students progress, they obtain a basic understanding of the elements of art and design principles, exposure to the unique and amazing cultures worldwide, and how art has adapted through time.

Music

Music coursework highlights musicians and works that extend internationally and across history. Students become familiar with different instruments, styles, and opportunities while integrating and applying this learning to core subjects. This dynamic approach empowers students to develop a love for learning while expressing ideas and feelings through lyrical and rhythmic productions.

Physical Education

Physical education teachers focus on movement and motor skills, warm-ups and cool-downs, along with sportsmanship and teamwork. Students are taught basic concepts and skills in various sports, including soccer, volleyball, and basketball. The curriculum emphasizes fun and mental/emotional well-being, promoting a lifelong commitment to activity and health.

Technology

Preparing students for a technological world is a key component of their education. Not only is technology used throughout secondary learning, but it will also likely play an important role in higher education, career aspirations, and other aspects of life. Students learn to type, utilize applications, learn basic coding, and work with robots within a framework and safety and responsible use.

Dance

Dance and yoga give children a basic review of different styles and movements. Instruction emphasizes flexibility, coordination, balance, and grace while boosting their mental acuity for other subjects as they develop self-control, confidence, and group cooperation. This foundation for technique prepares them for continued skill growth and a love for dance and yoga.

Theater

Theater classes instruct students on drama basics – from concept to performance. This includes an overview of acting skills, scripting, character development, and some costume design. The goal is to foster and encourage a love of theater while emphasizing team-building and elevating self-confidence.

Library/Media

Teaching children library literacy opens a world of life-long learning, creativity, and entertainment possibilities. Students develop skills in researching topics of interest, locating materials, and accessing them for temporary or extended use. They are also encouraged to check out books, care for them, and return them – developing core skills of sharing, cooperation, and responsibility.
