MAT Family

The Murray Adult Transition (MAT) is a comprehensive program designed to help young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities transition from school to adult life. Available to individuals 18 to 22 years of age, MAT program participants develop the skills and knowledge they need to live independently, gain competitive paid employment, access their communities, and achieve individual goals.

MAT consists of a variety of components, including:

  1. Vocational Training: Helping young adults with disabilities learn the skills they need to find and keep a job. This may include job readiness training, job coaching, internships, or other work experience opportunities through local community business partnerships.
  2. The program encourages families to connect with adult agencies and resources including, but not limited to: Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), Division of Persons with Disabilities (DSPD), Social Security Administration (SSI).
  3. Independent Living: Teaching self-advocacy skills, personal care, budgeting, and household management.  with community partner classes with the Utah Independent Living Center (UILC).
  4. Social Skills: Developing the skills they need to interact with others and participate in their communities, including communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.
  5. Academic Support: This may include tutoring, academic coaching, and support to complete high school or postsecondary education.
  6. Community Participation: Connecting participants with their communities and developing relationships outside their support circles. This may include volunteer opportunities, recreational activities, and social events. Students learn to navigate public transit to access their community.

In many ways, MAT organizers keep the program flexible and personalized to meet the needs of each individual as per the goals set by the Individualized Education Plan (IEP). It can include a combination of in-person and virtual services, depending on the needs and preferences of the individual and their families. And it offers suitable career counseling and job placement services, housing, and transportation.

Murray City School District values our relationship with MAT, the lives it changes, and the contributions to our community of young adults with disabilities and their families.
